With the intention of looking out for stressed out or concerned dog owners, the "mood ring" for dogs is a big helper that works within showing dog's emotions and sharing that information with the owner. Through the application "DEB," (Dog emotional button) owners can look at information of their own dog and other dogs close to their area that may have similar connections and similar questions that can be answered for these concerned owners. With this invention, we can explore dog's emotions and how they react to the world at a better rate.
Idea Process:
One of the most common forms of creating an idea for a piece is putting together a mind map, this was just an example of what one would look like. The basics is to make a main idea and form other ideas based on that idea. We gave this to various other people to add to it, even though they might be a bit rude (my family was being annoying during this part). Still, I wanted to craft an idea around smalls, my dog, because of course the project is about animals, so what better to choose than one you own? Within the various ideas given, I still had a bigger idea in my head, while i'll lay out during planning. Still, the creation of a mind map was a great way of forming ideas with others. |
While working with Murf, we learned our objective is to make something entirely new that would help with animals. I had considered with my own experience with my dog, I would focus on something I really believed would help out paranoid owners. The worst thing to happen would be if their dog got hurt, and sometimes it can happen at any time, but what I designed was almost something that attached to a dogs, and could tell their owner if the dog's mood ever got dangerously too high. This alert would identify within the attachment and would have various ways to alert the owner of this dangerous confrontation. My own dog had gotten attacked before, it was a horrible experience to see with my mother, I want to make sure people who are terrified of those things can at least be more cautious. |
One of the ways Murf had us think of a way of crafting ideas was to create a story just using two different objects. So, with a partner, we decided to make the "jealousy" story with a still-fish and a moving fan. The whole story is that the fan is always moving, and the fish wishes to be as moving as her, but the fan hates this difference about herself, and wishes to be still. This process was a nice way to grow through our skills in crafting an idea just using two objects. |
Planning:
The first idea I crafted was something I believe would be quite useful and common to do. Dogs can get this injected into them to truly get the inside emotions from the dog, and once that gets high enough to dangerous levels, than the chip would alert a resource such as Alexa, the owners phone, etc...I believe this would be quite useful as it wouldn't disturb the dog, and it would alert the owner at a more trustworthy rate.
|
The reason this sketch is in the middle is because this would basically be a creation within both other ideas. This is the app that the microchip/mood ring would connect to to alert the owner. Plus, most times Alexa connects with apps to give out alerts. I would create this app to show the owner a couple of things:
|
This is a close up of my original idea, this is the button/mood ring that would attach to the puppy/dog and grant its mood. This would be made for all sizes, and it would be small enough to fit onto the dog without the dog trying to knock it off, and they would eventually get used to it. It has the same connectable features to the app, and the microchip. It would be a nice size that could perhaps save a dogs life, or maybe even the owners.
|
: Inspiration :
A big inspiration for this piece was how the whole method of "mood" comes into place. I wanted to take in teh mood ring and adjust it to dogs for a more understandable pet and owner relationship. One of the biggest concerns from any owner could be solved if they could tell a dog's mood. If this was something that worked for dogs, I thought it would be very useful in the world of dog owners. |
An inspiration for the second idea comes from the ideas of "apps" in general. How would the information process to the owners phone and connect to other resources? Of course, this revolves around the use of an app, which led to my creation of something for the phone. Plus, with an app, you can store a lot of information and add more information for others to see, so it would be a great research material and data collector for any dog emotion researchers, and for just about anyone concerned for their pet. |
Creation Process: (+Experimentation)
This was more of an experimental start, as I didn't exactly into what to start with, as I wanted something smaller, I figured perhaps the cardboard could place within each other, but they turned out too big and kinda annoyed my dog, so I cut them shorted, but ultimately scrapped this idea, as I didn't like how it looked. Still I did use the cardboard within a smaller shape and made something more close to my actual planning. |
With the cardboard I had left over, I had crafted a smaller circle, and used a bottle cap from a water bottle and used prismacolor markers to color in the cardboard and to add the "emotion button," which with the project would show the emotion of the dog on the outside, for an owner or other person to see while maybe on a walk. I used scotch tape to connect it all together, but I might want to use something that'll stick more as there was some malfunctions with the parts staying together, but the process actually went well. As for the strand that would hold the button onto the collar, it took some time to focus on something that would stick onto the button and the collar itself. I took a strap from this bunny christmas decoration we had and attached it to the back of the object, this would connect the object and go onto the collar of the dog. With the attachment issues, I figured it was the tape I was using, as many of the tape would come off, so I used a different one we had and it worked better. |
This led to the final look of the object, as it was attached to a collar we had left around, this was my dogs "fall" collar according to my mother. It attached nicely and worked with the collar, but this is from an up-right position. As to not annoy the dog, it would go sideways, with the collar, and follow the side flow of the collar itself. With that, it was done, a button to show the dog's emotion. (If working it would show a variety of emotions, but since that's not a possibility, I stuck with the main emotion "happiness." |
Unfortunately, the tape did not "stick." So I tried something else, hot glue, and put it onto the cap to place onto the base of the button to make sure it really stuck there. Tape was an "experimental factor." |
Using my tablet, and an application called "procreate," I was able to make my own app cover for the product, as this app would be the one that shows data for other people to discover and place in their own information to. I worked with the colors and added in references for dog outlines and app images. I also used the layering function to layer in the images and work with them to create a solid image. |

Reflection:
This project was a whole experience into the world of industrial design. I really got to understand how they grew ideas and designed these objects we now see everywhere. Designing one myself was a challenging fact, as I thought about animals and had to think "what hasn't already been done." When I remembered that day my dog got attacked, it was a horrible day, if only we understood the emotions he felt right now we could understand that better. I think my idea grew very personal to me, and I crafted a good object of what the idea would look like. Though I could do way more and focus in on little details and more on the "inside" of the application itself. My main problem was my use of self-management. In this school environment, I always have things to do, not just in the future but through each day, and coming up with time to create this project was rough. I needed to focus more on using my time off on this piece, and I should've focused on the project to have more to put out. That is not to say I am not proud of this design, I just think some things could be done better, but the idea was captured.
On a better note, I really think I got to understand the parts of working in a MIAD classroom, and learning from a professor too! It was a nice enjoyable experience that I think I got out there with, and shows more of my ideas that I usually keep hidden to myself, as I am a big introvert. I do believe I grew out of that working with Murf, of course not fully, but I understood and listened to what he had to say, and gained experience I can think about in the future, experience to reflect on myself with.

Connecting to the ACT
- Clearly explain and describe how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationships between your inspiration and its effect upon your artwork?
The relationship me and my inspiration have are what is fully shown through my project, as I followed along with the aspects applications and mood rings had, and transferred them together to create something that would be helpful to not just dogs but people as well.
2. What is the overall approach (point of view) the author (from your research) has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
The creation of mood rings and applications almost have the same soul purpose into why they we're even created. Mood rings were a fun way to find out what mood you were in showing a pretty color, as apps can hold various amounts of information. i believe mixing those together are just part of an expansion to those ideas.
3. What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
It really shows how people become more reliable on technology and inventions these days. With all the work that comes together with creating an application and adding all this information. people just gradually enjoy things they don't have to do much work to get.
4. What was the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?
The central idea was to find something that connected with my planning, the planning sketches and idea process we had created in class mixed into what I wanted to create and I though of a mood ring, which would connect to an app that could connect to other things.
5. What kind of inferences ( conclusions reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning ) did you make while reading your research?
People generally see color as another way of seeing emotions, we put those things together as it is placed into our brains. For example, how green is to mean "happy," how does that color depict that emotion, it grows within what we are told. Plus, the creation of applications are a crazy endeavor.
