My newest piece, "Meeting Those Who Reflect on Lies," is about a tale of two different sisters. One was forever worshiped, as the other was cast aside for something she was framed to had done. The underlying truth only lies within the worshiped sisters mind, as she had actually done the horrible act to cast the other one aside. Every point and decision she had made lined up with how it was played out, and now her other sister is seen as a monster, but she doesn't care. She only wants the people's love and gifts, with one less person in the room, they only look towards her. Capturing both there auras, I placed them into the area's legends say they locate using color and line.

"After the Storm" - Linda Woods
|
Linda woods is an artist that works on self-expression, and uses abstract expressionism to do so. Her pieces uses color, texture, and symbolism to tell something to the reader. Linda Woods captures perfectly in the pieces to the right and left of what I want my piece to turn out. Those these two pieces do not connect, through my idea, they show exactly the grim/good idea I am going for with my concept. (shown later) Linda Woods also is an author and has wrote various books based on art and her own self-expression in the art world.

"Ocean Dreams" - Linda Woods
|
Linda woods did many abstract paintings that we're brought to life during the abstract expressionism movement. The movement valued personal expressionism, and was the first specifically American movement. Through this movement, I want to capture an idea and express it in an abstract way that gets the viewer to think when looking at the piece and make their own inference. Abstract expressionism conveys different artist styles and composition into making something that tells an idea and emotions a painter has, or had given the piece. |
"Yellow Islands" - Jackson Pollock - 1952
|
"Lady of the Lake" - 1912
|
The mythical inspiration to this piece is the story of the Lady of the Lake, and put into my own perspective. A woman of radiance and lives in the depths of the water. I wanted to split that character into two different ideas:
|
{ Planning }
The planning was actually my all time favorite idea I have done so far this year. Typically to get into the project phase, I need to understand what I am even working to do in the first place. So this tiny corner of my notes page was left to show what a Diptych was. I wrote down a Diptych's purpose and the various ways people work with Diptych art. This was just the start, now onto the actual idea. |
Now for the idea, I had many thoughts on what to make, but I knew I wanted to focus on good/evil, dark/light, and perhaps underlying secrets/hidden truth... As a collection to all my pieces this semester, I needed to add that within my deception theme. So I though, "deception of truth," I wanted to bring a mythical concept in this piece so I split the "Lady of the Lake" into two sisters with alternating personalities (as in yin-yang). Except, it follows a betrayal story of one sister overthrowing the other one in a way that would make her forever worshiped by the believers. So I wanted to capture the places they are in that future, one is betrayed and thrown to the side, while the other lives in a bright luxury, but with a hidden feature of flaw. |
This was the "good" side of the Lady of the Lake sisters. The people see her as true purity, and a beautiful mystery. After the criminal act played by her other sister, they all looked towards this one to help them out. Now, she lives with everlasting praise, exactly as she wanted, but the truth is nothing she can hide forever, as the world she lives in crumbles as she resides there. For now, she is happily living as a worshiped being, forever to be praised till erosion washes her away.
|
This is the "bad" side of the Lady of the Lake sisters . The people once saw her and her sisters as those who can never be split apart. Still, the people never felt exactly "comfortable" being around her, as many thought she was too serious and scary. So if a crime was put towards her, many believed it in an instant. Now, she had been banished from her position of power, for something she had never done in the first place. Now many strive towards avoiding her, but if those who dare to see her in the plane of disgust she lives in, they might be granted the truth of the entire story. But who would dare to do that?

:Process:
Painting #1
I first started off with the painting capturing the "bad" Lady of the Lake. Since it was basically my first time painting since a whole year had passed, I truly needed to understand what I was even going for. As I was working with the outside I planted various dots with my brush, as I sis this with swirls around those, I noticed they we're capturing some good trees, or at least the illusion of a forest area. So I continued that as the dusk and deep forest the waterfall ran into. Within that, the background is of the night to capture that dusk/dawn and light/dark sort of area I was going for. |
I captured this part to talk more about the waterfall in general, it first started off with a base color of a dark blue, I knew that I needed a trashy sort of color, this would represent the feeling the sister has to be thrown away from everything she once had, Looking at waterfalls, I realized the white color has a lot more prominence as well, so I added that within making it stroke down to show the current of the water and how it is flowing to the ground. This photo combines the main idea, the background, and the idea of dusk, I think my use of color is of prominence in these as I need a color to represent almost a forbidden and a abandoned area. |
This is how the finished product looked, as it seems a waterfall erupts from the sky to where a mystical creature would appear if visited. A nice little thing that connect the piece to the other one is that if you look at how far the water goes, you can tell at the bottom that the other painting concludes at that same part, as the sisters are one within each other. The feeling of dusk is truly brought out, this place is not like one you see in real life, but is still mystical, even if it looks dirty. |
Painting #2
This was during the second painting, the captured radiance of the "good" sister. I went for a way brighter blue, and more brighter colors in general. Of course, I started with a sketch of what I was looking for, these sketches are seen, but would be layered with the finishing of the painting. I wanted to capture water flowing through an area that anyone can visit, as if a landmark. With the water being around a bright and detailed structure. |
For the background, I wasn't sure where to go, but using almost the same structure as the trees, I was actually able to put clouds into this piece, and I loved how they looked.I placed them all into the background to mix in the structure with an outside feel. I wanted it to look beautiful. I wanted it to look dusk still, in a way, she isn't a perfect creature after all. Many things around her look pretty, but still hide things. |
As this was the finished product, looking towards the black spots is the cracks talked about in the planning, sure the water is beautifully still running, but the cracks shelter her flaws. Also I used nice simple strokes to make the water flow. Then, dotted on a white to show the control of the water currents. The overall piece was to look bright, and I believe with the colors chosen, I captured that nicely. Plus, the water does run through the bottom, like the other piece, as both connects. |
Experimentation:
Fully my experimentation process was through the various colors i had to use, fully I worked with the following colors:
|
This is close to experimentation, I mean, it was basically me experimenting with how I wanted to outline the painting. Through these I gained the concept of colliding the water, and making various similarities with the background.

:Reflection:
This piece was something that had inner conflict between me. In reality, I really am not the best painter, and I mean that as in I have little to no experience, so when I was given this project, I was extremely nervous of the turnout, actually within putting the project off for a couple days. I can not say the same thing to the planning though. Working on the note page, it was extremely fun, the idea I crafted had become one of my favorites so far. Even though I created two characters, I knew I only created them for the sake of crafting their aura's into a symbol for the piece. I adored this planning so much, and I really had fun with my abilities to create a detailed personification of two different emotions. I really enjoyed that part. Onto the painting itself, I had fun doing that as well, which was a shock! Perhaps it was the christmas music I was listening to, but I really grew with what I was working with, and the painting turned out better than what I thought the turnout would be. So in general, I think my use of symbols and textures really brought the piece to life.
Comparing me to my inspiration, I really followed into their footsteps while also giving it my own spin, which was what I wanted, so I really think this painting was a success. Is it perfect? Of course not, I am only a beginner as this was like my third official work with paint. In complete reflection. I really do believe I put my skills to the test and carried out painting an idea I had, and I am shocked with how nice I think the painting turned out. I really enjoyed working on this project, and perhaps might look forward to doing something like this again, or to grow on this idea in the future.

:Connection to the ACT:
- Clearly explain and describe how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationships between your inspiration and its effect upon your artwork?
Within using Linda Woods work with my idea, I do believe it really captured the colors and ideas I wanted to add into my piece, and it effected how I carried them out through my piece.
2. What is the overall approach (point of view) the author (from your research) has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
Linda Woods is someone that values self-expression and has wrote various books about what it is to self-express your own art. So I believe with the idea I crafted from an idea I wanted to elaborate with expresses myself perfectly.
3. What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
Since using abstract expressionism, and within it being the first American movement, it was really exciting to connect with a movement that went on with the people that have grown in the same place I lived in. It also shows how expression was a big concept through art.
4. What was the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?
The central idea I was looking for was light/dark, I wanted to capture two different entities and how the lies that were spread through their story affects the way they live now.
5. What kind of inferences ( conclusions reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning ) did you make while reading your research?
I made inferences to self-expression through my research, as that was a big part to look through. This can also connect to the global context, personal and cultural expression. Through a movement made through art culture, I crafted an idea and turned it into something that expresses my creative mind.
